Ellen Corbett, Board Member
Ellen Corbett was appointed to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board in March 2015. Prior to her appointment to the Board, Ellen served in the California State Senate since 2006, where she was elected Senate Majority Leader in 2010. As Majority Leader, she was responsible for helping set the legislative agenda, managing the Senate's Floor operations, and served as the lead advisor in political matters and strategy to the Senate President pro Tempore.

Throughout her career, Ellen has focused on protecting consumer rights, strengthening the economy at the local and state levels, and protecting natural resources while encouraging the growth of the green economy. During her time in the Senate and Assembly, she passed laws to improve compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, improve access to special education services, and to expand representation on the State Council on Developmental Disabilities. She also passed laws to provide students with more information regarding student loan options and risks, give car buyers additional safeguards, and protect homeowners that suffered during California's housing crisis. Additionally, she worked to secure funding for education, transportation improvements, environmental projects and economic development opportunities.

Ellen has a long history of public service. Prior to her time in the Senate, she was elected to the California State Assembly in 1998 where she served until 2004, when she was termed out. She has served as a City Council Member and was the first woman elected Mayor of San Leandro. Ellen has also worked as an attorney, community college professor and civic activist, and is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the East Bay Regional Park District.

A native Californian raised in the East Bay, Ellen attended local schools, including Chabot Community College and California State University, East Bay. She graduated from the University of California, Davis and McGeorge School of Law.
